There were many Jews throughout the Roman Empire who were completely unaware of
the existence or work of Jesus Christ. Being ignorant of this “new testament” initiated by Christ through
his work on Calvary, they were still under the “old testament” law. In the book of Acts, the Holy Ghost
makes known to us his initial work with the four possible people groups from whom many would become
part of the church.
That the Spirit dealt with these four groups in slightly different ways is noteworthy. This
shows us that the initial works of the Spirit in Acts are not a pattern that we should seek to copy. The
book of Acts is not a doctrinal treatise for the church, but a historical record of the progressive work of
the Spirit with respect to the church. Once this work had been established, all of the loose ends are tied
together in Paul’s inspired, doctrinal teachings to the Church, the body of Christ
