Redeem means to “buy back.” The idea here is that all men originally belonged to God by the right of creation; because of sin, mankind was separated from God; God therefore “bought back” man by virtue of Christ’s shed blood on the cross. This redemption is applied to any person at the moment of belief in Christ.
